Baroque getaway in the Alps

The Hautes vallées of Savoie, the Pays du Mont-Blanc in Haute-Savoie and the Roya and Bévéra valleys in the Alpes-Maritimes share a common heritage: Alpine Baroque art. Theatrical, colorful and gilded, it spread throughout the states of the House of Savoy in the 17th and 18th centuries, spurred on by its princes and by the Catholic Church, which saw in it a formidable opportunity to renew its message and seduce its faithful.

The Fondation Facim and the players in these three territories, of which the commune of Saint-Gervais is a part, supported by the European Union, are joining forces to offer you new experiences around this art.

Discover the keys to understanding a culture spread across five continents far beyond religious heritage alone. You’ll be offered discovery materials, unusual tours and shows based around this Baroque art.

Baroque art

The Baroque, an artistic movement that emerged in the 17th century, is an iconic visual expression characterized by its exuberance, dynamism and attention to detail. Born in Catholic circles in Europe, Baroque quickly spread to various artistic fields, such as architecture, sculpture, painting and music.

In short, Baroque art is a celebration of life, emotion and dynamism. It has the ability to captivate and provoke intense reactions in the viewer, creating a deeply immersive artistic experience. As part of the Baroque Escapade in the Alps, this art continues to fascinate visitors, transporting them to a past rich in history and creativity.
