Saint-Gervais is one of the few communes in Haute-Savoie to have preserved so many fortified houses around its town, either intact or with significant ruins that can be clearly seen.
Situated on a road linking the Arve Valley, the Beaufortain and the Tarentaise, the town of Saint-Gervais has occupied a strategic position since medieval times.
