This lecture complements the Japanese Aesthetics exhibition by providing an in-depth yet accessible insight into the fundamental concepts that shape artistic forms, perceptions and practices.
From prints and wash drawings to ikebana, calligraphy and the tea ceremony, she shows how these concepts are interlinked within a single cultural, historical and geographical system unique to Japan. The structure and aesthetics of Noh theatre are explored as a distillation of these principles, through a photographic allegory of the play Funa Benkei.
