Julien Pelloux, mountain guide with the Saint-Gervais/Les Contamines guide company and historian, discusses the ties forged between border companies.
The Mont Blanc massif is no obstacle to trade between the valleys. Trade between Courmayeur in the Aosta Valley and Saint-Gervais in Val-Montjoie dates back centuries. Language, commerce, and pilgrimages have united the populations on both sides of the massif since ancient times. In the 19th century, these cultural traditions were perpetuated by mountain guides. The Courmayeur Guide Society (1850) and the Saint-Gervais Guide Company (1864) became sister mountain organizations from the moment they were founded. Through first ascents, guide festivals, meetings, museum creations, etc., a spirit of mutual aid and mountain solidarity developed. Guides worked to preserve these ties, the most famous being Luciano Maregliati, former director of the Duke of the Abruzzi Museum in Courmayeur. During this conference, “Saint-Gervais-Courmayeur, guides in good company,” we will celebrate the friendship between the guides of Saint-Gervais and Courmayeur!

Julien Pelloux is a high-mountain guide with the Compagnie des Guides de Saint-Gervais/Les Contamines and holds a master's degree in history.
