The history of ski resorts in France is fascinating and often overlooked. It explains the development choices that have been made and helps us better understand the current situation. The ski resort economy, based on real estate and invented in the 1960s, is coming to an end. Numerous threats and challenges require a reorientation of this economy, taking into account the inhabitants of the region. How do we want to live in the mountains tomorrow, when the new climate regime is shaking up our certainties and our economic activity, when political and geopolitical uncertainty is imposing new methods of governance, and when the energy transition is going to disrupt the foundations of our daily and collective lives?

Guillaume Desmurs, journalist, writer, and publisher, is involved in debates on the future of white gold through the LaMA Project. He lives and works in the mountains because he loves the slopes. He created the Grisbi collection (Éditions Inverse) dedicated to the transformation of mountain regions. His latest books are: Ca sent le roussi dans les Aiguilles (JM éditions), Le crépuscule des Jeux/Enquête sur les JO 2030 (éditions Guérin), and Pour la montagne (Glénat).
