Description
Two identical, featureless paper figures emerge from a kraft-paper sofa and set out to explore a new world. Blending slapstick, poetry and transformation, Maskaraft plays with masks—and with the ways they both conceal and reveal us.
Two identical, featureless bodies with paper heads are born into our world from a kraft-paper sofa. Their sensory exploration of this space leads them into a series of surprising events. Through a string of mishaps, the two creatures gradually reveal themselves and grow apart. With their senses awakened, they set out to discover their place in the world, their purpose, the very essence of who they are… or simply the mask that suits them best.
From the light-hearted slapstick of commedia dell’arte to the mystical experience of masked rituals, and through the imaginative world of carnival, Maskaraft explores the ambiguity of masks: they conceal as much as they reveal. From a simple sofa, an absurd and complex universe unfolds.
What happens when we put on masks? Why have they fascinated and unsettled us for millennia? With their faces silenced, bodies can speak a language everyone understands, while inviting each audience member to find their own interpretation. Maskaraft does not necessarily follow a linear narrative, leaving ample room for the audience’s subjectivity and for multiple readings.
Kraft paper, a defining element of the show’s monochrome aesthetic, becomes the raw material for improvised mask-making. We shape, reshape, tear, stick back together, punch holes and patch them up. The result is a spectacular, raw and organic transformation—with plenty of humour along the way.
