Perched in the mountains, the refuges of the first adventurers, tracing routes to the high Alpine summits, sometimes appear. For a long time, chamois hunters shared these shelters with mountaineers. Then, when the mountain pastures were covered with hiking trails, and the mountain became a sports and leisure area, the refuge was transformed into a place of welcome, sometimes becoming a high altitude hotel. Thus, the architecture of these buildings bears witness to the relationship between man and his mountain, and the exhibition retraces over two hundred years of intimate history.

The exhibition presented at the Maison forte de Hautetour, in Saint-Gervais in 2022-2023, was created at the Musée Dauphinois in Grenoble and was on view in 2020-2021. The partnership between these two institutions, which are strongly committed to the promotion of mountain heritage, now allows the latter to have a new visibility in the heart of the Mont Blanc massif.
