Identity card

ID card validity period: 15 years as of January 1, 2014. ATTENTION: this extension does not apply to secure ID cards for minors. They will be valid for 10 years when issued.

The minor must be accompanied by one of his or her parents with his or her identity document. Adults and children aged 12 and over must be present when the application is submitted and when the new passport or identity card is collected. Fingerprints are taken during these operations. Children under 12 years of age must be present when the application is submitted.

A pre-application must be made online (this pre-application does not exempt you from going in person to the counter at the town hall for fingerprinting and submission of your application).

  • Documents to be supplied

    All documents to be provided must be originals. One of the following documents to prove your civil status:

    • A birth certificate issued within the last three months showing your filiation – It is no longer necessary to provide a civil status certificate if the user was born in a commune connected to electronic communication of civil status data (COMEDEC) even in the case of a first application. Information on communes connected to COMEDEC is available here.
    • Old secure national identity card (plastic) expired less than five years ago, or copy of valid biometric passport. If you were born in a commune that dematerializes the issuing of civil status certificates, you no longer need to provide a birth certificate as proof. Your civil status details will be securely verified directly with your birth town hall. To find out whether your commune of birth is concerned, ask at your Mairie or log on here.
    • Failing your old identity card, a declaration of loss or theft.
    • A proof of address less than one year old: electricity, gas or telephone bill, title deed, tax or non-tax certificate, home insurance certificate. If the original of these documents is on a digital medium, a printout of it will have the same value as the original.
    • An identity photo less than six months old and resembling the day the application is submitted (neutral face, uncropped head, uncut, color, recent and identical on a light background).
    • The card is free of charge, but in the event of loss or theft it is necessary to purchase a tax stamp or a dematerialized stamp worth €25 (can be purchased online from the Direction Générale des Finances Publiques website).

    Additional documents for a minor

    • If parents are divorced or separated, the judgment justifying parental authority and residence;
    • Piece of identity of at least one of the parents.
  • Common name

    In the event of divorce: the operative part of the judgment mentioning the authorization to keep the name in use;
    For a minor: written authorization and ID of the other parent.

  • For a person of foreign origin

    Certificate of French nationality or birth certificate issued by the central registry office in Nantes (11 rue de la Maison Blanche 44941 – NANTES CEDEX 9). Information on communes connected to COMEDEC is available at this address.

  • Documents to be supplied

    One of the following documents to prove your civil status

    All documents requested must be originals.

    • A birth certificate issued within the last 3 months, showing your filiation; It is no longer necessary to provide a civil status certificate if the user was born in a commune connected to Communication Electronique des Données de l’Etat-Civil (COMEDEC), even in the case of a 1st request. Information on communes connected to COMEDEC is available here
    • A biometric or electronic passport (whether ordinary, mission or service), valid or expired within the last 5 years. (biometric and electronic passports are secure documents and can be identified by a symbol representing a circle inside a rectangle which appears on the cover under the word PASSPORT);
    • A passport known as DELPHINE (recognizable by its civil status page arranged in landscape mode) or any other passport (issued manually, for example) valid or expired within the last 2 years;
    • A secure national identity card (laminated) valid or expired within the last 5 years. If you were born in a commune that dematerializes the issuing of civil status certificates, you no longer need to provide a birth certificate as proof. Your civil status details will be securely verified directly with your birth town hall. To find out whether your commune of birth is concerned, ask at your local Mairie or log on here;
    • A non-secure national identity card (old cardboard model) that is valid and expired less than 2 years ago);
    • A proof of address less than one year old: electricity, gas or telephone bill, title deed, tax or non-tax certificate, home insurance certificate. If the original of these documents is in digital format, a printout will be considered the original.
    • A recent passport-size photo that is less than 6 months old and resembles the photo taken on the day the application is submitted (Passport standard)

    • Minor + 15 years: €42

    A dematerialized stamp can be purchased online from the Direction Générale des Finances Publiques website.
